All the central government employees – railways, post and telegraph, defence etc have decided to launch an all-India indefinite strike in view of the adamant attitude of the government to consider the suggestions of the Joint Consultative Machinery regarding the Fifth Pay Commission.

The employees in Mumbai will hold protest rallies at various centres. The railwaymen of CR will hold a joint rally on July 10 before the CR general manager.

Sanskrit Day

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan will celebrate Sanskrit Day on August 22, 1997. To commemorate this, they have organised essay-writing, play-reading, kanthapatha, antakshari competitions for school and college students on August 16 and 17 at Bhavan’s Hazarimal Somai College. Medicine awards

The Lady Tata Memorial Trust has announced awards for scientific investigations in the diseases of the blood with special reference to leukaemia for the year 1997-98. This year’s international award has been given to Dr S Bose from India apart from 11 other persons all over the world.
