A three-day festival of Turkish films will be kicked off at held at the Y B Chavan from March 30 at 6.30 pm. A tribute to noted Turkish film-maker Omer Kavur, the festival has been organised by Prabhat Chitra Mandal in collaboration with Cinemaya-Netpack and the Embassy of Turkey. Three films – Motherland Hotel, The Secret Face and Journey on theClockhand will be screened.
IMA president elected
Dr K S Aithal, a Goregaon-based physician, has been elected president of the Indian Medical Association (Mumbai, western suburbs). He took over fom Dr B S Mehta. He will focus on social security schemes for young practitioners during his tenure, said a release.
Book on Indian cinema
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees, an apex body of film workers and technicians in the Hindi film industry, is releasing a book Magic and Mystique, dealing with the history of Indian cinema as seen through people working in Bollywood. Painter M F Hussain will release the book on Monday at the ISCKON Auditorium, Juhu.
District governor elected
Dr J T Vyas has been elected district governor for the Rotary District 3140 covering Mumbai and Thane. Dr Vyas is the head of general surgery at Nanavati Hospital. He joined the Rotary Club of Bombay West in 1981 and was elected charter president of Rotary Club of BombayNorth Island Juhu in 1985.
NRMU stages dharna
Members of the National Railway Mazdoor Union (NRMU) today sat on a dharna to protest the non-absorption of apprentices who had completed a training programme of the railways into service for the past five years. According to the union, the apprentices had undergone a three year training programme but have not been absorbed following a decision of the railways not to recruit any new staff despite there being vacancies.

B N Adarkar, economist and former governor of the Reserve Bank of India died on Friday at Breach Candy Hospital after a brief illness. He was 87.
