July 15: As many as 683 buses of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) were damaged during the last four days in several stone-throwing incidents in the city and its suburbs.

In the continuing stone throwing incidents after the Friday police firing 62 drivers, 11 conductors and 14 passengers sustained injuries.

One of the injured drivers is still in hospital.

On account of desecration of statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Mata Ramabai Ambedkar colony, followed by police firing, sporadic incidents of violence erupted in many pockets of the city and suburbs. Agitation people have also resorted to stone throwing.

According to a BEST spokesperson the BEST has taken precaution to ensure safety of buses and other BEST properties.

Man arrested for raping minor

A minor girl, employed as maid servant with a Vashi based doctor, was allegedly raped on Tuesday morning by the security guard of the colony.The Vashi police have arrested Kashiram Ramsingh Deokar for allegedly raping the 15-year-old victim.

Deokar was remanded to police custody by a metropolitan magistrate of Belapur court.

The victim, who hails from Tamil Nadu, used to work as a maid servant with Dr Krishnan, a resident of Sector 8 in Vashi. She, according to the complaint lodged with the police, had finished the household chores and had gone to sleep last night when Kashiram knocked at the window. When she opened the door to enquire, the security guard allegedly pounced on her and was in the act of raping her when the doctor’s wife entered the room, hearing the girl’s cries. On seeing the woman, Kashiram ran out of the house. He was later arrested by the police.

The victim had been working in the doctor’s house for the past two years. Dr Krishnan, when contacted, refused to comment on the episode. The case has been filed under Section 376 of Indian Penal Code and inspector Y Chavan of Vashi police station is investigating the case.
