KC profs to stage dharna
The junior college teachers of K C College, Churchgate, will stage a dharna at Azad Maidan on Monday protesting the management8217;s failure to appoint a supervisor for two years.
As per the Maharashtra Government Order, 1987, every junior college should have a supervisor on seniority basis and on rotation for two years. The principal administers the junior college functions through the supervisor.
8220;Teachers had gone on a hunger strike last year as the management had not appointed a proper person as the supervisor,8221; said the KC College unit secretary, Baljinder R. She added that in August, 1997, the government created the post of vice principal in junior colleges, but in KC, this appointment has yet not been done, depriving teachers of promotions.
State tops in HIV positive cases
Maharashtra has the largest number of HIV positive and AIDS cases. Health Minister Daulatrao Aher told the national conference of Indian Association for the Study of Sexually TransmittedDiseases STDs and AIDS that out of 71,739 cases of HIV positive reported in the country, over 44,103 were from Maharashtra. Similarly, of 5,154 cases of AIDS reported in India, 2,518 were from the state, Aher said, 8220;The figures suggest that over 50 per cent of the country8217;s HIV positive as well as AIDS cases are reported here. As far as STDs are concerned, the study has revealed that 41 per cent were from the state,8221; Aher said.
While his government is extending treatment to 55,000 patients attending the state-run hospitals, stress should be laid on intervention programmes more than creating awareness , he opined. 8220;The treatment of STDs should be backed up by services like counselling, while intervention programme among the high risk should be implemented in a package of treatment and counselling,8221; Aher added.
