Smart Card in BEST buses
MUMBAI, June 23: Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking General Manager, Vinay Mohan Lal, on Monday, announced the trial run of the Smart Card system, with Philips demonstrating the working of this ticketless wonder in AC buses, feeder suburban routes and a city route. The cost of the trial run of Smart Cards will be borne by Gemplus India Pvt Ltd, a company part of the project.

With this project, the undertaking will provide instant information on the number of commuters between each fare stage, in each route and in each schedule.

Extortionist nabbed
A notorious extortionist, wanted in many cases, was recently nabbed by the Dombivli police. Posing as a policeman, Ganpatrao Niputre tried to extort money from an unsuspecting couple at the Rotary garden on Sunday. Then he demanded their jewellery. A scuffle ensued when the couple refused to part with their ornaments. Their cries of alarm was heard by a passing beat policeman S Bhosale, whoapprehended the cheat.

Otis workers8217; token strike
Workers of Otis Elevator Company India Ltd went on a day8217;s token strike on Monday. After an agreement with the management on wages, recruitment and stoppage of private workers ended in December 1996, the union has since been negotiating for another agreement. The union has also opposed the management8217;s decision to implement a pension scheme. The workers have threatened to launch an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.

Civic workers, cops beaten up
Three policemen and two civic workers were injured on Monday when they tried to evict illegal occupants on BMC land in Borivli W. The residents of Simpoli Crossroad, Rajda Nagar, threw chilli powder into the eyes of the officers who came to evict them from their houses. Then they hit the officers who were treated for minor injuries, according to police inspector R Chaglani of Borivli police station.

Medical exhibition
A four-day medical exhibition and the sixthinternational multi-faculty medical conference, Health and Medicare India 988242;, will kick off at the World Trade Centre on Wednesday. Health Minister Dr Daulatrao Aher will inaugurate the exhibition, to be presided over by Dr V K Gavit, Aher8217;s deputy.

The event has been jointly organised by EXICOM and NOWEA, the international division of Messe Dusseldorf, Germany. About 102 companies, of which 54 are from India, will display their equipment, surgical instruments and pharmaceuticals.
