He fought to be elected as an MP. Three times. Lost every time. Now he’s taking a shot at being President.

Dr Leo Rebello, Mumbai’s naturopath-cum-well wisher and natural born politician material, will be filing his nomination papers for President on June 5, along with the likes of Dr Karan Singh, jurist L.N. Singhvi and Maharashtra Governor Dr P.C. Alexander. The doctor’s getting ready for Z-plus security and travelling across the country, garnering support from the 7,000 electoral colleges.

Dr Rebello asks some rather pertinent questions. Like, why should only octogenarians be elected as President? ‘‘Is Rashtrapati Bhavan a retirement home? If you want a Christian president, why not me?’’ he asks. ‘‘I am young, 52, secular, I represent three minorities — I am Christian, my wife is Parsi and I am a humanitarian.’’

He doesn’t lack support. Somebody he befriended on the net has sent him a Demand Draft: All the best. Other friends have offered to campaign for him — at a cost of Rs 10 crore only. ‘‘All I need is Rs 25,000 as deposit, which will be returned to me when I get elected,’’ he says. He also gets the deposit back if he pockets one tenth of the votes (around 700), which, he says, is no problem really.
