Father who burnt family dies in hospital
The unemployed father who had set his family on fire last Friday died on Wednesday in a city hospital. His two daughters had already succumbed to burns earlier.
In a gruesome incident, 62-year-old Harishchandra Chavan set his wife, Lata and two grown-up daughters Chhaya and Rupeshwari on fire in the dingy BDD chawls at Worli at 7.30 am. Later, Chavan too immolated himself. His wife is still battling for her life. According to police, Chavan allegedly bolted the door from inside before dousing his daughters and wife with kerosene, while they were fast asleep. Then he set them on fire.
Escaped prisoners held
Two inmates from Nizamabad prison in Andhra Pradesh who had escaped with 72 others on March 29 were arrested by Thane police at Virar on Wednesday. Superintendent of Police (Thane Rural) Ashok Kamte said based on information that criminals had taken shelter in makeshift slums at Manvelpada, Virar (E), a police party conducted a raid andarrested Bansi Budya Bakya (25) and Hira Bhavsingh Bagwat (22), both residents of Nizamabad district. According to Kamte various cases of murder and dacoity have been registered against the duo in AP.
