MUMBAI, Sept 12: Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav this afternoon remarked that the recent statements made by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani about the dismissal of the Rabri Devi government in Bihar, were “unconstitutional.” Yadav also threatened that the Union Government will “have to pay a heavy price” if it dismissed the Bihar government on any ground.

Yadav is in Mumbai to address a public rally of Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha to be held at Shivaji Park in Dadar here on Sunday afternoon.

The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, addressing a press conference, tirades against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and State Chief Minister Manohar Joshi for what he called “challenging the law”.

“The BJP government is challenging the rule of law, the judiciary and the Constitution. How can the prime minister or the home minister say anything about dismissal of a state government when the power to do so is entirely with the President of India? The BharatiyaJanata Party has no grounds to pull down the Rabri Devi government. But if the BJP does it, the people of Bihar will take it on the streets and burn down the government in New Delhi,” Yadav said.

Yadav, on his part, praised Rabri saying the law & order situation in Bihar was better as compared to some BJP ruled states. He demanded a commission be appointed to review the law & order situation in certain states. “The commission must be asked to submit its report in two to three months, so that the real picture will come out. The BJP can no more mislead citizens about the state of the country,” he added.

Yadav demanded that those found guilty by the justice B N Srikrishna commission must be punished. “Bal Thackeray must be jailed and be charged under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Action must be taken against chief minister Manohar Joshi for threatening the judiciary,” Yadav said.

Yadav, however, refused to answer any questions about initiating action against those found guilty in communalriots which took place in his regime in Uttar Pradesh.

Yadav said he would “think of extending support to the Congress” if the latter came forward to pull down the BJP government in New Delhi and form its own. He remarked that the Vajpayee government had failed on every ground and had no reason to remain in power.

Happy to be `casteist’

  • When asked about his reaction to the charges levelled against him as a casteist leader by the Congress, Mulayam Singh Yadav said he happily accepted being labelled a casteist. “If supporting people from the backward class and oppressed castes is termed as a casteist, I am proud to accept the new nomenclature. I will continue to do what I have been doing for such people,” Yadav added.
