Microsoft Corp launched a refurbished MSN search engine for India on Wednesday, as competition boils over in the potentially $6 billion global internet search market.

With Google.com and Yahoo! Inc, hoping to become the search engines of choice for the thousands who get online every year in Asia, MSN India said it was hoping for early-mover advantage in India. ‘‘In the barely-monetised Indian search market we are all set to fill a vast gap,’’ said R. Rajnish of MSN India.

Microsoft officials said 70 to 80 per cent of internet users use search engines, adding up to 70 million-strong serach engine users by 2010 in India alone.

‘‘We are excited about opportunities the search market offers,’’ Rajnish said. Microsoft developed its new search engine over two years, partly at its development centre in India, which worked out the tool bar. Search engines have become increasingly complex in recent years, as developers strive for higher speeds, accuracy and reliability.
