Mahindra 038; Mahindra has unveiled its much-awaited sports utility vehicle SUV Scorpio at its Nashik plant on Thursday. Pitched against Tata Sumo and Toyota Qualis, Scorpio comes in three models and has been priced very competitively. The base model Scorpio Diesel Turbo 2.6 with Euro I compliance has been priced at Rs 5.5 lakh while the Euro-2 will cost Rs 5.8 lakh.
The Turbo 2.6 DX version would be available for Rs 6.1 lakh and the Euro II petrol version would be at Rs 7.07 lakh. The company would also shortly be launching a low-end version titled Scorpio NA priced at Rs 5.2 lakh. The petrol version will sport a two litre MPFI Renault engine while the diesel version would sport a 2.6 litre, 109 bhp turbo intercooled DI engine made in collaboration with AVL-Austria. M038;M has also maintained a significant differential of around Rs 70,000-80,000 between the fully loaded versions of Scorpio and its other multi-utility vehicle offering Bolero in order to avoid cannibalisation between the models.

M038;M has retained the Scorpio name for its SUV as it feels that it would help to leverage on the goodwill built up over the last four years. Interestingly, in a definitive shift, M038;M is labelling the product tagline as Scorpio from Mahindra instead of the traditional Mahindra Scorpio. 8220;We want Scorpio to stand as a brand by itself and want to use the Mahindra name more as a sort of re-assurance and support,8221; says M038;M vice-chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra. M038;M is initially planning to sell 600 units in July and gradually ramp it up to 2000-2500 units per month over a period of time. The direct competitive segment for the Scorpio is estimated to be around 12-15,000 units per month as the company is also targeting a section of the mid-size car segment.
The whole cost of the Scorpio project was at Rs 550 crore. Of this, Rs 300 crore was spent on common facilities and Rs 250 crore on Scorpio which incidentally would help in rolling out other variants. 8220;We are looking at an additional investment of Rs 150 crore over future variants over the next couple of years. Our peak capital investment is over, both as far as our automotive business and farm equipment sector business is concerned,8221; Mahindra said.
