The Haryana Police today said that no special security had been provided to Krishna Malik, wife of DGP M S Malik, and the ruling Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate from Sonepat.

Reacting to the report in The Indian Express today, the spokesman also denied that any carcade with a pilot and escort had been provided to Malik. ‘‘No police vehicle escorts the candidate and the jeep with a redlight atop belonged to the local MLA Ram Kumar Saini and did not belong to the Police Department,’’ said the spokesman.

He also said that the jeep had been parked in a narrow lane in the opposite direction of the carcade of Malik. It was neither a pilot nor an escort vehicle. The police, he claimed, were making security arrangements during the visit of candidates to urban and rural areas.

The report mentioned and showed, along with a photograph, how an armed Haryana Police constable jumped out of the Tata Safari in which Malik herself was travelling. Another constable, who was driving the jeep with the red beacon, said: ‘‘Hum Madam ki duty pe hain,’’ (We’re on Madam’s duty). His name badge was missing but not his Haryana Police insignia.

Asked about the police escort, Malik told The Indian Express: ‘‘I think, it is to maintain law and order. I am contesting polls for the first time, it has probably been arranged by the party (INLD).’’

Today, when The Sunday Express visited Sonepat, neither the jeep nor the constables were present. When asked about this, Krishna Malik said: ‘‘Yes, there were some policemen with me till yesterday. But I had not asked for any security. I do not need it.’’
