PATNA, SEPT 14: In spite of their tall promises to work for development of Bihar, the MPs from the State have refrained from putting their development funds to good use.

A report from the Union Project Implementation Ministry reveals that though Rajya Sabha members from Bihar were allotted Rs 13,300 lakh, only Rs 8,525 lakh was spent. This comes to around only 63 per cent of the fund allocated.

A comparative study reveals that MPs from other states have been more generous with their funds. For instance, MPs from Arunachal have spent about 88 per cent of the funds. In Bihar, RJD MP Ranjan Yadav has been probably the only exception. He has constructed roads and nallahs from his fund and recently, he took up the Patna beautification project. Film actor and RS member Shatrughna Sinha too initially tried his hands at this but lost interest soon. Union Health Minister C P Thakur, as MP, donated fund for the construction of a few roads.

Apparently, the members are hardly interested in developnment of agriculture. Small irrigation canals are drying out and so are the ponds meant for irrigation.

Ironically, the district administration in Bihar too seems averse to help the members. In fact, senior officials say they have instructions from higher ups not to help the Opposition members. Insiders reveal that disagreements between the contractors and members’ close aides over sharing the money has been one of the reasons for non-utilisation of the fund.
