In another twist to the controversial case of a rape victim being presented at a political function, the victim, Jamuni Bai has approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) for protection. NCW chairperson, Poornima Advani said: ‘‘Jamuni Bai approached the Commission saying her life is under threat from the men who murdered her husband’’.
‘‘Dignity of women is paramount and at no cost should cases of crime against women be politicised,’’ she added.
Jamuni Bai was introduced by BJP leader Uma Bharati at a public meeting, also attended by the PM A.B. Vajpayee, on October 19 in Bhopal, as a symbol of mounting atrocities against women in the Congress-ruled state. Madhya Pradesh CM Digvijay Singh had on November 3 written to the Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh, demanding action against the BJP leaders for violating modal code of conduct by ‘‘bribing’’ Jamuni Bai for attending the function.
In her complaint submitted yesterday Bai stated, ‘‘I feel insecure as the people who murdered my husband have threatened me’’. Advani said the NCW has asked the state to provide security to the victim and directed political parties not to rake up the issue.
