Global mobile equipment maker Motorola on Thursday said it would consider manufacturing in India to comply with the eligibility criteria of deals with state-run carriers like BSNL and MTNL, but remained non-committal on any immediate plan in this regard.

‘‘We are not closed to it… We will consider manufacturing here. We will do everything to comply with the tender conditions of the PSU telecom carriers… But I can’t say when that will happen or in what shape, size and form. Our focus is to gain siginficant market share here and attain a critical mass,’’ Edward Zander, chairman and chief executive, Motorola, said here.

Zander also expressed his commitment to upscale the company’s operations in India in R&D, value-added manufacturing and e-education, and visualised a big role for the company’s communications technology in India’s defence, public safety and transportation. He described India as an incredible market.

On the occasion, Trai chief Pradip Baijal underlined the need for change in policy, which is oriented towards increasing the tele-density in rural India where the huge market was waiting to be tapped.

Motorola Chief Technology Officer Padmasree Warrior revealed that the company was in plans to develop technologies beyond 3G, like Wi4. ‘‘For this we are seeking support from the regulator by way of making spectrum available ,’’ she added.
