SURAT, July 2: A fifteen-month-old infant died and its mother was admitted to the New Civil Hospital of the city after the woman was bitten by a snake in the Magdalla port area on Surat-Dumas Road on Wednesday.

Sajjuben Harjibhai Amaliar was feeding her son when a snake bit her on the lower part of the leg. Both mother and child were shifted to the hospital, where the infant died. His mother was reported to be in a serious condition.

Hospital sources told Express Newsline that under normal circumstances, a suckling child should not be affected by venom through the milk of the affected mother unless there was a cut in the child’s mouth and the milk got mixed with the blood. The exact cause of death, however, can be ascertained after a post mortem, which was conducted by doctors today. Results of the examination were, however, not available.

Dr Purohit, stationed at the G-2 ward of the hospital, said on Thursday that although Sajjuben had gained consciousness today, her condition was still critical and doctors had been monitoring her health closely.

He added that anything could happen within a week as snake bite cases usually took a turn for the worse a couple of days after the bite. Anti-venom injections have already been administered to the victim.
