Melaine Walker made it yet another celebration for Jamaica when she won the women’s 400 metres hurdles and Aksana Miankova of Belarus took the night’s other gold in the women’s hammer.

In yet another US vs Jamaica battle, Walker overhauled American Sheena Tosta in the home straight to triumph in an Olympic record 52.64 seconds. Tosta took silver and Tasha Danvers grabbed bronze for Britain.

Jamaica have now collected seven athletics medals, including golds in three sprints.

Miankova wins hammer

Miankova of Belarus won hammer with her penultimate throw of 76.34 metres pushing Cuba’s Yipsi Moreno into second place. Moreno, also silver medallist in Athens four years ago, responded with 75.20 metres on her final throw but that was not enough.

Bekele advances

Looking for a long-distance double, 10,000 champion Kenenisa Bekele easily advanced into Saturday’s final of the 5,000, letting his US rival Bernard Lagat take the third heat.

Blonska tests positive

Ukraine’s Lyudmila Blonska, the heptathlon silver medallist and second-best qualifier for Friday’s long jump final, had been thrown out of the Games after testing positive for steroids. She only returned to competition in 2005 after serving a two-year doping ban and now faces an automatic lifetime ban.
