In a new twist to the ongoing battle between Mohun Bagan and the All-India Football Federation over the latter’s decision to suspend Subrata Paul, the Kolkata club has said it had evidence on a private video recording to show that the goalkeeper had no contact with Cristiano before the Dempo player collapsed.
Balaram Choudhury, the club’s assistant secretary, said the club’s stand was that Doordarshan footage was not conclusive enough. The privately sourced video, he said, ‘‘is far more clear and distinct’’.
Also, he said, Paul — facing a show cause notice from the AIFF — had told club officials that there was no full-force contact; at most, the tips of his gloves may have brushed against the onrushing striker.
The club’s defence on Paul’s behalf will include this video evidence, the fact that the referee did not punish him, the statement of the Bangalore police commissioner on Monday exonerating him from culpability for the death, and the interim post mortem report.
The club has already raised with the AIFF the point that the match officials took no action against Paul at the time. Admitting this, federation secretary Albert Colaco said Paul had been suspended by law.
‘‘In any tournament run directly by the apex body of any country’’, he told The Indian Express, ‘‘respective associations have the right to intervene despite no report being submitted by match officials.’’
His last gift to Juliana
Cristiano Junior’s wife Juliana has requested Dempo officials for a CD recording of the Fed Cup final. In particular, say club officials, she wanted the sequence after Cristiano’s first goal when the player ran up top the TV camera and mouthed a personal message to his wife. ‘‘It’s the last gift he gave her’’, the official said. Meanwhile, Juliana paid a visit to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, where the body of her husband has been kept, and spent more than two hours with senior doctors.
