MOGA, Sept 3: A group of villagers, who mistook three policemen walking in the street late last night for gangsters, attacked them and lynched one head constable, identified as Tarsem Singh.
Even as the two other constables managed to escape from the site in nearby Basti Lalsingh village, Tarsem Singh was stripped and his naked body was taken through the main streets of the town by the crowd this morning. The crowd later sat in dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here.
As they reportedly tried to hang the deceased on a nearby tree, police swung into action and had to use “mild force” to recover the body. The body was sent for post mortem.
The macabre drama unfolded around 1.30 a.m. today when the three policemen caught hold of a 10-year-old boy in Basti Lalsingh with the intention of killing him. As an alarm was raised, the residents chased the policemen and caught hold of Tarsem Singh, while the other two managed to escape. His hands and legs were allegedly tied by the mob before beating him up.
The deceased was wearing a black vest, black trousers and black shoes and was also carrying a small sword.
In the morning, the head constable was dragged out and a demonstration was first staged at the Subedar Joginder Singh Crossing here. Tarsem Singh was battered to death here and his body was dragged to the DC’s office. The agitationists sat here in dharna and the police had to resort to action as the mob refused to hand over the body.
The DC has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Deputy Inspector General (Ferozepur Range) Hardeep Singh Dhillon, while terming the incident as “most unfortunate”, called upon the people to maintain restraint and not take law in their hands.
