Not all was gruesome in the Gujarat massacre. There were tales of love and humanity. One such tale was of Nadirabibi Sheikh (60), who saved one Kishorebhai Chauhan from a mob of 1,000 baying for his blood.

While Hindus and Muslims in Gujarat were killing members of each other’s communities in Gujarat in 2002, Nadirabibi stood by what she felt was right. Seeing Chauhan surrounded by a mob of 1,000 she rushed out of her Slum Board Quarters in Danilimda (Ahmedabad) and challenged the mob to kill her before laying a hand on Chauhan.

With modesty writ

large on her face, this mother of four and wife of a retired railway employee says: “Community comprises you and I — we are all human. I saved him because he was a human being. They did try to intimidate me by stealing my goat but I stood my ground.”

She was also instrumental in preventing a temple demolition. “I reasoned with the mobsters that demolishing a mosque in Ayodhya did not mean destroying a temple near our home.”

Today, Nadirabibi and Kishorebhai share a relationship which is beyond words. Both visit each other’s families and also work together on local issues.
