A dispute between an employee of a liquor vend contractor and an egg seller yesterday night took an ugly turn in Maur Mandi near here when it claimed two lives. A number of others were injured, two of them critically, due to gunfire opened by the two sides.

One of the deceased, Buta Singh, the brother of Sukhdev Singh, who, according to police, tried to intervene in the scuffle between Jasdev Singh and egg seller Kala to sort out things, died on the spot due to the bullet wound.

Jasdev Singh, the other deceased, died in hospital later in the evening.

“In fact, Sukhdev had managed to strike a truce between the two. But they started fighting again after Sukhdev left the scene,” said Talwandi Sabo DSP Surinder Pal Singh. “During the physical assault on each other, they hit the shutter of Sukhdev’s shop. Sukhdev, whose house is near his electronics shop, presumed that they were trying to break open the shutter. Sensing something untoward, he called up his family members, who, including his three brothers and father, reached the spot with a gun,” the DSP said.

In the meantime, police said, Jasdev also called up his boss, contractor Pawan Kumar, telling him that he had a dispute with the egg seller. “Pawan Kumar, along with a few other persons, also reached the spot with a gun. Sukhdev’s family thought that Pawan had come to target Sukhdev. Both sides opened

fire and Buta Singh died on the spot,” said the DSP.

Jasdev and his brother Jaswinder got injured and were rushed to a hospital in Ludhiana in a critical condition, said the police, where Jasdev succumbed to his injuries.

The DSP, however, could not specify the cause that led to the “initial scuffle” between Jasdev and Kala. “The case is being investigated. We would see what caused the scuffle,” he said.

He, however, categorically denied any direct grudge between the two groups that opened fire. “It all resulted due to a dispute between Jasdev and Kala. While Jasdev is dead, Kala is absconding. Only he can tell why they fought with each other,” said DSP.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder, besides other sections of IPC against Pawan Kumar Jaswinder Singh, Gurtej Singh and Makhan Singh.

The DSP said a counter case of murder was also be registered against the other party for the murder of Jasdev and attempt to murder for firing at Jaswinder.
