KIEV (UKRAINE), April 5: At least 60 coal miners were killed by a powerful methane gas explosion and fire that tore through a deep coal mine, an energy official said today.

A number of miners were still trapped in the mine, and the death toll was expected to rise, said Pavlo Kozlov, a spokesman for the Donetsk region emergencies ministry. A fire inside the mine continued to burn, hindering rescue efforts, he said.
