Microsoft Corp launched a major upgrade to its multi-media personal computer software aiming to bring more computers into people’s living rooms. Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 is the latest variant of Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system that doubles as a digital video recorder, music player and image viewer.
Rather than being used mainly with a keyboard and mouse, Media Center PCs are all equipped with a remote control that allows users to control multimedia functions. Touching the mouse causes the computer to revert to the Windows desktop.
Among the newest features in Media Center is the ability to print and edit digital photographs, listen to the radio and also download digital songs and movies from content service providers.
Pays $10.5m to end Windows lawsuit NEW YORK: Microsoft corp settled an anti-trust suit over its Windows software by agreeing to refund up to $10.5 million to people that bought Windows directly from the software giant. The settlement, which was announced on Tuesday and must be approved by the US District Court in Baltimore, would resolve a class-action suit that alleged Microsoft used its monopoly power to overcharge consumers. Customers that file claims will receive a check equal to 55.1 per cent of the total price of qualified purchases, said Stacy Drake, a Microsoft spokeswoman. She said there are about 550,000 qualifying Windows licenses. (Dow Jones Wire) |
