KARACHI, APRIL 21: Pakistan’s cricket team was rocked today by the surprise resignation of coach Javed Miandad less than a month before the start of the World Cup.

Miandad said he had faxed his resignation to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Khalid Mahmood in Lahore, citing “pressing family commitments.”

“Due to pressing family commitments, I would not be in a position to continue my assignment as coach of the Pakistan cricket team,” Miandad, a former captain, said in the letter.

The resignation was tendered with immediate effect. Miandad said: “I wish the team good luck in the World Cup and hope and pray that the title returns to Pakistan.”

Both PCB officials and Miandad were not available today to comment.

Miandad’s resignation came at a high-point for Pakistan who won the Sharjah Cup earlier this month and have dominated India and Sri Lanka recently in Test and One-Day Internationals.

It also wasn’t clear who would replace him as coach.
