SURAT, DECEMBER 29: Vinod Kambli struck form posting 116 (203b, 11×4, 1×6) as Mumbai took a 114-run lead and a marauding Paras Mhambrey later ensured that an outright victory would be a formality on Thursday in the West Zone Ranji Trophy league match against Gujarat here at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium.
The big disappointment of the day was Wasim Jaffer, overnight on 139, failing to reach his double century after adding 34 runs on Wednesday. He played as fluently as he had yesterday, but shuffling across a straighter one from Hitesh Majumdar was trapped in front of the wickets for 173 (312b, 409m, 21×4, 1×6). In association with Kambli he had added 152 runs for the fourth wicket.
Kambli gingerly edged towards his century as Jaffer’s wicket triggered a procession to and from the pavilion with the Gujarat medium-pacers monopolising the spoils on day three. He reached the coveted figure with a powerful cover drive off Lalit Patel.
When Gujarat began their reply, Mhambrey struck in his second over toclaim Kotecha. Only opener Nilesh Modi (batting 38: 127b, 4×4), stuck to the task solidly as Mhambrey sliced through the Gujarat innings, his analysis reading 11.4-5-15-4.
