With Republic Day just a couple of days away, the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday reviewed security measures, particularly those being taken for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the capital.
At a meeting, chaired by Union Home Secretary V K Duggal, there were discussions regarding the security arrangements from January 26 to 30.
Intelligence inputs have indicated that suicide bombers from militant groups, including some women cadre of the ULFA, might have entered Delhi as part of plans to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations. Attempts to target the Beating Retreat Ceremony on January 29 are also not being ruled out. Officials said that the Delhi Police and other security agencies have already been put on high alert.
Tuesday’s meeting was attended by Union Home secretary, defence secretary, secretary security, Commissioner of Delhi Police, director of Intelligence Bureau and special secretary Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Asked about the security arrangements, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan said it was in pretty good shape but he was keeping his fingers crossed.
A few days ago, security agencies and state police forces had been asked to step up their vigil after there were reports that remote-controlled “toy planes” laden with explosives could be used for militant strikes during election campaigns.
