The Medical Council of India (MCI) will ask the Centre to derecognise five medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly not maintaining standards and upgrading equipment despite repeated instructions.

The decision, taken yesterday at MCI’s annual general body meeting, has been conveyed to the Centre, sources said. The colleges are: G R Medical College in Gwalior, Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal, MGM Medical College in Indore, Jabalpur Medical College and Rewa Medical College.

‘‘The colleges are more than 40 years old,’’ said an official. According to sources, most equipment in these colleges is defunct and the license of the blood bank has not been renewed. ‘‘About 30-40 per cent of the posts are lying vacant and nothing has been done,’’ he said.

According to MCI, the deficiencies were pointed to college authorities several times but have not been rectified.‘‘The last inspection was conducted some three to four months back,’’ the official said.

The state’s representatives, who attended the meeting, said that the MCI had inspected these colleges in 1998 and asked them to upgrade equipment and manpower.

The MCI Act permits the council to review the status of medical colleges every five years and recommend derecognition if requirements are not met.
