Inmates of the district jail here today went on the rampage indulging in heavy brickbatting prompting the jail authorities to fire in the air to bring the situation under control, a senior police official said.
The inmates, protesting the murder of Samajwadi Party corporator Banshi Yadav in the prison premises on Wednesday and shifting of some prisoners suspectedly involved in the incident to the Central Jail, tried to breach a barrack and indulged in heavy brickbatting, SP (City) Gyaneshwar Tyagi said. Jail authorities had to fire in the air and sound the emergency bell to alert the staff to control the situation, he said. Additional force has been deployed in the jail premises as a precautionary measure, Tyagi added.
Yesterday, seven members of a gang suspectedly involved in the gunning down of the corporator were shifted to the Central Jail after DM Himanshu Kumar admitted that some jail staff might have connived with criminals to murder Banshi Yadav.
