Gautam Khanduja, Mumbai-based businessman and fiance of Nafisa Joseph who committed suicide on Thursday, told police on Saturday he had temperamental differences with the beauty queen due to which he called of their marriage slated for August 7.

In a statement to Versova police, Khanduja said Nafisa and he were dating for nearly one-and-a-half year, but of late, differences had cropped up and he decided to part ways. In a four-hour grilling session, Khanduja, accompanied by lawyer Dipesh Mehta, also told police that Nafisa was upset over his decision to call off the marriage.

Later, in a signed statement to the media, Khanduja said it would be incorrect to state he was not divorced as his divorce had taken place on February 10, 2003.

‘‘Over the past two days, various reports in the media have speculated on the cause of Nafisa’s suicide. I have chosen not to respond to any of these reports that sully the memory of our precious relationship,’’ he said. Police were earlier trying to locate Khanduja to record his statement after Nafisa’s mother, Usha Joseph, claimed the model was upset over her strained relationship with her fiance.

DCP Amitabh Gupta said Khanduja appeared before police as a witness but refused to dwell upon Khanduja’s statement, saying it was confidential in nature.
