
WELLINGTON, February 21: New Zealand played themselves into a commanding position on the third day of the first cricket Test against Zimbabwe at Wellington’s Basin Reserve today.
In reply to Zimbabwe’s first innings total of 180, New Zealand made 411, highlighted by a maiden test century from Craig Mcmillan.
For the home team, Mcmillan top scored with 139 while Nathan Astle (42), Dion Nash (41) and Stephen Fleming (36) were the other notable contributors.
Mcmillan brought up his century 10 minutes before tea with a six over long on from off-spinner Andy Whittal. His hundred took 159 balls and 212 minutes and included 15 fours and a six.
Mcmillan’s previous highest best score was 54, against Australia at the Gabba and at the WACA in Perth later in the same series.
New Zealand scored 108 runs in the session without losing a wicket.
Mcmillan and Nash’s partnership came in 110 minutes off 160 balls and at tea, the stand was worth 108.
The previous seventh wicket record for New Zealand againstZimbabwe was 97 between Nathan Astle and Chris Harris at Bulawayo late last year.
