Maintenance of streetlights Commissioner not satisfied with tender policy

An escalation of Rs 2.5 crore in two years in the budget proposal chalked out for the maintenance of streetlights in the city has raised many eye-brows in the Municipal Corporation.

This year, the authorities proposed a budget of Rs 8 crore for maintenance of streetlights by private contractors while in 2007 this figure was Rs 5.5 crore.

Even Municipal Corporation Commissioner G S Ghuman was surprised. “The proposal needs to be examined again. Maintenance cost cannot increase by Rs 2.5 crore in two years.”

On Wednesday, fresh tenders were called for the project but several contractors did not fill the forms alleging bias on part of officials.

Also, the tender box remained unopened till the evening — a violation of the norms.

The contractors then met the MC Commissioner and asked him to look into the matter.

Ghuman said he was not satisfied with the tender policy as well. “I plan to investigate the matter on Thursday,” he said.
