Setting a record of sorts, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday recommended a CBI probe into the police recruitment scam that allegedly took place during the regime of former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.Interestingly, this is the seventh case that has been handed over to the CBI by her Government. However, except the one case relating to the alleged irregularities in the allotment of plots in Noida, the CBI hasn’t taken up any. On Monday, after referring the police recruitment scam to CBI, Mayawati said: “Since the case involves some senior police officers and politicians, we would not like people to raise fingers at our Government for functioning with political vendetta.” In the past too, Mayawati came up with more or less similar explanations every time her Government recommended a CBI probe. “The trick is to attack all, at the same time, keep her own hands clean and also not to make direct enemies,” said a party insider. Her move comes shortly after a three-member committee, headed by Chief Secretary P K Mishra, which looked into the irregularities in the police recruitment held last year, recommended a CBI probe. The committee report — placed before the Cabinet on Monday — recommended that the Central agency should look into complaints of sexual abuse of women recruits and put behind bars the “big names” involved in the scam. Interestingly, though Mayawati did not mention any names in her press conference, the release issued by her office later clearly mentioned that “the then PWD minister, a special secretary to Chief Minister, the then two DGPs and one ADG were prima facie found to be involved in large-scale corruption and bribery. Meanwhile, talking to The Indian Express, former PWD minister Shivpal Singh rubbished all allegations, while terming her as “the most dishonest and corrupt chief minister.” Claiming the inquiry report did not bother him, Shivpal said,“She can get a probe done by whichever agency she wants to.’’ Police recruitment scam and other cases.• The murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, in which recently arrested SP MP Ateeq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were accused. However, the CBI had refused to take the case.• Alleged irregularities in the NOIDA plot allotment case during the time of Mulayam Singh Yadav Government. About 1250 plots were allotted to VIPs violating all rules. Interestingly, the previous Government in 2005 had managed to pull breaks on the CBI inquiry which started again on November 23 last, after the intervention of the Supreme Court. • The dowry harassment case against Union Minister Arjun Singh and his family members. The CBI inquiry, however, did not take place as the case was put aside after a court stay. • Former Minister Anand Sen Yadav’s involvement in the kidnapping and murder of a Dalit girl. The case is still being probed by the state police. • Food scam, which she referred to as ‘the mother of all scams’, amounting to approximately Rs 35,000 crore. The scam, according to her, took place during Mulayam’s regime. The request of state Govt is pending. • The alleged communal CD case in which many senior BJP leaders are named.
