February 1: New tennis star Amelie Mauresmo has made her peace with Lindsay Davenport but branded Martina Hingis as `stupid’ following their remarks that the Frenchwoman played “like a guy.”
The muscular Mauresmo, playing powerful tennis which stunned her rivals, beat Davenport in the Australian Open semis, but went down in the final against Martina Hingis.
Davenport and Hingis’ remarks on Mauresmo’s build led to huge media coverage, particularly after the French player announced she was a lesbian.
But Davenport later said she admired the French teenager and said she had been solely referring to Mauresmo’s style of play.
Mauresmo, a former junior Wimbledon and French champion, but who had been unseeded at Melbourne, told L’Equipe, France’s leading sports daily, the row with the American player was over.
“She wrote me a note — I appreciated that. It was important to me. I think Lindsay is a nice person,” she said. “I was surprised by her comments because she is stronger than I am, hits the ball harder and is a fair size herself.”
But she said that Hingis’ reported comments that Mauresmo was `half a man’, later denied by the Swiss player, were an “unpleasant joke.”
