PUNE, Dec 3: Eight hundred children from 45 special schools in the city participated in a march past organised by the Bal Kalyan Sanstha at Police Parade Ground this morning to mark World Disabled Day.

With Padmashree Taranath Shenoy as chief guest the message delivered was one of overcoming handicaps and emerging winners in life, accepted with delight by the children from the swimmer who has won accolades despite being hearing impaired.

Participating schools included Vidya Jyoti school for slow learners, Pirungunt Sanskar Kendra for mentally handicapped children, Yamuna School for the Orthopedically Handicapped, the Alandi Blind School and Centre for Cerebral Palsy Children. More than 2,000 children including some from four normal schools took part in the demonstrations, mass PT, mallakhamb and lezim that followed.

Meanwhile, the Ayodhya General Hospital at Vikasnagar held a free health camp where 258 people from lower income families were examined and treated for malfunctions ranging frm deafness, physical handicaps to eye problems. “The work will stretch onto next week, 10 people will be provided with micro ear surgery, six with cataract surgery and two with tricycles for the handicapped,” said Dr SS Bhutada, managing trustee of the hospital. Other hospitals that held similar camps included Shri Hospital at Sukrawar Peth and the Speech Therapy Centre at MG Road.
