Cutting costs
THE Left Front government in Tripura has announced a series of measures to cut down its expenditure and step up revenue collection in the state.
These include 10 per cent reduction of electricity use and 20 per cent cut in sanction of fuel to government departments. Along with other initiatives, these could save the state at least Rs 20 crore a year.
Hospital for Assam zoo
THE growing incidence of deaths in the Assam state zoo in Guwahati has prompted authorities to start a state-of-the-art hospital. The Central Zoo Authority has sanctioned Rs 15 lakh for it, with the state government announcing an equal sum. Over 50 animals including rhinoceros and tigers have died in the zoo in the past few years.
Black times for coal exports
MEGHAYALA8217;S coal export has hit an all-time low in the past few months with Bangladesh, the major importer, calling a halt. Bangladesh took the decision following India8217;s allegation that it had provided safe haven to militant groups from the northeast.
Three more districts for Nagaland
THE Nagaland government has decided to create three new districts in the state, taking the total number to eleven. According to chief minister N Rio, the new districts8212;Peren, Kiphire and Longleng8212;would take the administration closer to the people living in these remote areas.
