• The decision to drop Sourav Ganguly was disastrous, almost atrocious. It doesn’t stand professional scrutiny at all. Instead, it smacks of vendetta by the new regime, as if it were out to overturn in a hurry everything that had been done by the old guard, somewhat reminiscent of a new government hell-bent on carrying out a “witch-hunt” against the old regime. It is especially unfortunate for the Sharad Pawar regime that such a parochial decision should be taken at the outset, since the new president is a prominent national leader who has been known to nurse prime ministerial aspirations.

Once upon a day
• In ‘Little Boy Lost’ (IE, December 14), Mini Kapoor goes back to that beautiful afternoon of December 14, 1989. She speaks of Waqar Younis inflicting a bloody nose on Sachin. But what the cricket lover also remembers from that day is the challenge that Pakistan’s leg-spin bowler threw at Sachin, and how, undaunted, the 16 year old Sachin flogged him for 4 sixes and one four in one over, leaving the great Imran and others, including our own Srikanth at the other end, watching with their mouths wide open — all with a small bandage covering the injured
nose of Sachin.

Media on target
• Till a few days ago we were ticking off the media for blowing up the news of Amitabh Bachchan, ‘Bachchanalia around the clock’ (IE, December 13). Not so anymore, ‘Operation Duryodhan was well-named’ (IE, December 15). The expose of corruption by Aniruddha Bahal on Aaj Tak will go a long way to establish the fact that the media still has credibility in this country. The exposed ministers should be immediately stripped of their portfolios, before the scourge of corruption spreads further.

Think again
• One finds no valid reason why Indian Airlines had to rename itself as only ‘Indian’. ‘Indian’ can stand for anything Indian under the sun; it doesn’t specifically refer to domestic air transport service. An image make-over was essential for the public air carrier to compete with the private airlines. But more thought should have gone into the process.

A different God
• had Karl Marx been alive and happened to be on an ‘India Darshan’, he would certainly have corrected his claim by clubbing cricket with religion as the opium of the masses.

Famous victory
• I am a regular reader of The Indian Express and I did not find adequate coverage of the BJP’s sweeping victory in civic elections of major cities of Gujarat. Gujarat happens to be one of the most exciting states in terms of FDI, local investments, infrastructure, development of its coastline, ports etc. Narendra Modi recently said that Gujarat is not competing with other states in India but with China. These are exciting times for India, and Gujarat.
