MUMBAI, November 25: Mike Tyson may not have anything to do with this bizarre cannibalistic incident in Kalyan today. But six months after `Iron’ Mike Tyson bit off boxing champ Evander Holyfield’s ear, a man in Kalyan chewed off and swallowed an acquaintance’s ear.

However, the world heavyweight title wasn’t at stake here. “I did it for kicks,” Vinayak Kadam confessed to policemen after his arrest. “I am fond of eating all kinds of flesh,” he revealed insouciantly.

The desi Holyfield, Bhagwanrao Raut, lives near the Godrej Hills. He said he and Kadam work as masons together at construction sites, and there was no enmity between them, till that day at least. On Sunday, Raut said, “Kadam said something to my wife at the construction site, to which I took offence. If he was angered by my reaction, he didn’t show it that day.”

When Raut was walking towards the market the next day, when he was called by Kadam on the street on the pretext that he wanted to tell him something “secretive and exciting”. When Raut stepped forward, Kadam pretended to say something in his ear, lunged forward, bit off a piece and then swallowed it.

A bleeding Raut was rushed to Rukhminibai Hospital and given first aid. He then filed a complaint with the Mahatma Phule police station. A posse of policemen which set out nab the desi Hannibal the Cannibal Kadam, found him hiding high up on a tree, well out of their reach.

The fire brigade was then summoned. They spread a net and after a considerable wait managed to get the accused down.

Confessing to his flesh-eating fetish, Kadam even offered to eat a live lizard scurrying on a wall of the police station. He was arrested under Section 384 of the IPC. Head constable Thackeray is investigating the matter.
