NEW DELHI, OCT 14: Mamata Banerjee, the first woman to head the Railway Ministry, has directed the Railway Board to ascertain the reasons for the delay or non-implementation of rail projects in different states.

The firebrand Trinamool Congress leader, who assumed office on Thursday, told a press conference that her first priority would be to ensure safety of the travelling public, punctual movement of trains and clean stations and trains.

She would also endeavour to involve every railway employee in improving the network’s services. A sense of belonging is necessary, she said and spoke of the need to involve even the lowest staff in the decision making process.

Banerjee said she would soon meet the general managers and divisional railway managers (DRMs) to ascertain their views on various problems facing the railways.

To a question, she said no state or region would be discriminated against so far as the development of railways is concerned.

Minister of State for Railways Digvijay Singh, who also assumed charge earlier in the day, assured that the social obligations undertaken by the railways would not be curtailed while modernising and improving its network.
