February 15: Delhi, led by Vijay Kannan and Vishal Uppal, registered an easy win over Andhra Pradesh in the tennis team events today. Uppal, playing first, beat Anuj Viplav Kumar 6-1, 7-5. In the other singles, Vijay Kannan, the highest ranked player here, beat veteran Vasudeva Reddy 6-2, 6-2. Reddy found the going tough on the synthetic court against young Kannan.

Kannan started off the match with a double fault but held serve mainly due to Reddy’s unforced errors. An erratic Reddy committed far too many errors but at times made a few stunning backhand returns.

Later, Andhra met strong Maharashtra and Vijendra Laad put the latter ahead by winning the first singles. However, with Vasudeva Reddy leading against Mustafa Ghouse, play was called off due to bad light.

In the morning, Maharashtra, playing with their second string, routed Arunachal Pradesh 3-0. The north-eastern state could not win a single game in the entire tie as Mustafa Ghouse and Vijendra Laad in singles and the pair of Asif Ismail/Gaurav Natekar trampled their opponents.

Hosts Manipur had to face a similar rout as Arunachal Pradesh as Tamil Nadu’s Manoj Mahadevan and Vinod Sridhar won their singles without dropping a game.

In the women’s, Maharashtra represented by Radhika Tulpule and Janaki Krishnamoorthy toyed with their Manipuri opponents V Kim and Khabl Devi.

Six women’s teams have divided into two groups for the quarter-final league. The final of the team event will be held on February 17. In the individual events will start on the same day and continue till February 20. Vijay Kannan (Delhi) and Rushmi Chakravarthy (Tamil Nadu) have been top seeded in the individual events.
