The Rolling Stones’ Forty Licks show has had an unexpected effect on the Maharashtra government.

Realising that live entertainment shows are a simple way of raking money for their empty coffers, the state Cabinet on Wednesday decided to reduce the tax levy on entertainment to 25 pc from the current 49 pc.

In 2000, the government imposed a 39 pc entertainment tax and 10 pc surcharge on live entertainment shows. Organisers simply took their shows elsewhere. For instance, Elton John’s concert was shifted to Bangalore.
