PATIALA, June 4: Matches in the boys section in the 49th Junior National Basketball Championship finally got off to a start here today, the fourth day of the meet, after the organisers completed the process of medical tests for age verification.

It is learnt that as many as 86 boys from 19 different states have been disqualified after being found overage, by a team of Sports Authority of India doctors which conducted medical tests.

Maharastra boys thrashed Mizoram 63-13 in the opening encounter. They led 37-9 at half time. Maharashtra boys kept consistent pressure on their opponents and scored almost at will. Gaurav Kalia and Onkark Adam (18 points each) were the chief architects of their side’s win while Apporu (11) and Harpreet (9) supported the two.

Madhya Pradesh managed a hard fought 70-66 win over Orissa despite trailing 19-35 till half time. Skipper Objit Singh (21 points), Dheeraj and Digvijay Singh (15 each) were the principal scorers for MP while Ashok Nayak’s 24 points for Orissa went invain.

The most interesting match of the day however, was between Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Both the teams matched each other before TN lads pipped their opponents 61-60. Rajasthan beat Karnataka 78-56 in another match. Karnataka lads squandered a 30-27 half-time lead. Kerala beat Himachal Pradesh 51-27 in another league game as Tino John (17), Madhu (14) and Xavier (8) kept up the scoring rate for the winners.

Vinay Dadwal resisted their challenge, getting 10 points, while Vijay Paul (7) and Rakesh Kumar too tried their best but could not help HP stave off a defeat.
