Suspended IPS officer B B Mahanti, who was declared an absconder after evading police for allegedly helping his rape-convicted son jump parole, on Thursday told the Supreme Court he will surrender in two weeks.

Mahanti’s lawyer informed about the surrender to the SC which declined to stay the execution of a non-bailable warrant against the Orissa cadre officer accused of helping Biti flee after he was jailed for raping a German national in Rajasthan. He has been in hiding for five months.

Responding to the submission, the SC said Mahanti could surrender before the Rajasthan Police. He has been evading both Orissa and Rajasthan police since August 24 and a Jaipur court has also declared him, a former chief of Orissa Home Guards, an absconder on suspicion that he helped his son escape while on parole and is hiding him.

A Bench comprising Justices C K Thakker and D K Jain said the bail plea would be heard expeditiously by the trial court in Jaipur only after he surrenders. Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik, whose Government has admitted that it failed to arrest Mahanti, has said “law will take its own course” once he surrenders.
