Following the furore over the sudden, and as yet unexplained, custody death of SI Pratap Kakade, the district collector has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Resident Deputy Collector Suhas Diwse said the inquiry would not only record statements of all jail inmates and officials, but also relatives of Kakade, a stamp scam accused.

Yerawada jail authorities, who have already been questioned by CBI over Kakade’s death, submitted a detailed report to the district collector on Friday. Collector Prabhakar Deshmukh said the inquiry was necessary irrespective of the content of the jail authorities’ report. ‘‘First, a magisterial inquiry is mandatory in case of a jail inmate’s death. Besides, there were certain discrepancies and suspicions are being raised over the cause of death’’ he said.
