AMBALA, Feb 25: Madhya Pradesh prevailed 2-0 over Kerala in the first quarterfinal match among women in the All India Civil Services badminton tournament here at the War Heroes Memorial Stadium today.
Delhi women outclassed Uttar Pradesh by an identical margin in the second quarterfinal. MP were given a flying start by Sangeeta Rao, who beat Tresa Rajan of Kerala 11-1, 11-1. In doubles, the MP pair of Sangeeta and Vandana defeated Tresa Rajan and Manimol Abraham of Kerala 15-2, 15-0.
On the other hand, Delhi’s Amarjeeet Kaur won her first singles match against Reeta Pathak of UP 11-1, 11-0. Amarjeet then paired up with Renu to beat the UP pair of Geeta Rani and Reeta Pathak 15-3, 15-0.
In the first round matches in the men’s section, Andhra Pradesh outclassed Assam 3-0. Prabhaker Reddy (AP) beat Firoze Hassan (Assam) 15-0, 15-2 while Iqbal (AP) beat Bisham Dhar (Assam) 15-3, 15-5. In doubles, Ganesh and Venkata (AP) defeated Pratnal Chaudhary and Bisham Dhar (Assam) 15-3, 15-6.
In another match, Haryana prevailed 3-1 over Vadodara (RSB). In the first singles, Vivek Dhankar beat B K Sharma 15-12, 12-7 and in the second Unikrishanan Vasine (Vadodara) beat Niraj Ahuja of Haryana 15-2, 15-11. In the first doubles tie, Vivek Dhankar and Surinder Jatrana (Haryana) defeated Unikrishanan and P Satyanarayan of Vadodara 15-5, 17-14.
In the last singles tie, Surinder Jatrana (Haryana) beat B H Valand (Vadodara) 15-1, 8-15, 15-12 to give his side the rubber.
Earlier in the first round match among women, Delhi beat RSB Chennai 2-0. Amarjeet Kaur (Delhi) beat Santha Kumari (Chennai) 11-3, 11-0 while in doubles the Delhi pair of Amarjeet and Renu blanked Shashi Kala and Santha Kumari 15-0, 15-0. In another match, Delhi Central Secretariat beat RSB Vadodara 2-0. Delhi’s Rakhi Meena beat TR Parmar (Vadodara) 11-3, 11-8 while Neera and Rakhi beat T R Parmar and Beena Kumari 15-2, 15-2.
