For the first time in more than 30 years, Lucknow University was on Friday closed sine die following violent outbursts of students against the implementation of Lyngdoh panel8217;s proposals to cleanse students8217; union elections.
Vice Chancellor Prof Ram Prakash Singh also announced cancellation of the forthcoming Lucknow University Students8217; Union LUSU elections. Seven LU-affiliated colleges, where union elections were due, have also closed down for an indefinite period in view of the tense atmosphere.
The last time LU was closed was in 1974, when students had joined the intense campaign of the PAC personnel for constituting a union for the latter.
After declaring the varsity8217;s closure, the Vice Chancellor told The Indian Express that the university would not conduct union elections even if students agree to comply with the Lyngdoh panel8217;s recommendations. 8220;The varsity will not go for polls for at least one year,8221; Prof Singh stressed.
The move came minutes after the varsity authorities met Governor T V Rajeswar, who is also the LU Chancellor. Though the V-C evaded queries on what transpired, he said the Governor has sought a list of problems faced by the LU administration.
