SANGRUR, July 21: The residents of Longowal town of the district observed complete bandh yesterday in protest against the acquittal of six accused involved in the conspiracy to assassinate Sant Harchand Singh Longowal at Akal Parkash Gurdwara at Sherpur of the district on August 20, 1995.
The residents were up in arms against the state government and the CBI (who investigated the murder of Longowal) for “not persuing” the case which led to the acquittal of the accused from the designated court of Additional Sessions Judge B. C. Rajput on July 17 at Nabha. The court observed that the seventh accused Gian Singh was guilty in the case and fixed July 25 for hearing arguments to decide the quantum of punishment.
Addressing the rally at Longowal, Gobind Singh Longowal, an Akali MLA and follower of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal alleged that neither the state government nor the CBI showed any interest to lead the prosecution case. He condemned Akali Dal (Mann) for celebrating the acquittal of the accused.
