India’s defeat of Germany on Sunday won them a new admirer — Argentina’s star goalscorer Jorge Lombi. The highest goalscorer at last year’s World Cup, Lombi told The Indian Express that his dream was to invite India to play in Argentina.

After his country’s match against Germany today, Lombi — who has scored 260 goals in 210 internationals and won the most international goalscoring awards — approached this reporter and said, ‘‘I have one wish in my hockey career which has not been fulfilled so far. I have never played India in front of my home crowd. I want to invite the Indian team to play Test matches in Argentina.’’

The Indian style was popular in Argentina because of the skills involved, he said. ‘‘We find European hockey boring but Indian hockey is attractive to watch.’’

Before that, though, the two teams will be locked in hard competition on Wednesday and Lombi — who scored twice today — will be the player to watch. In their last encounter, India beat Argentina 4-1 but Lombi was recovering from an injury. So there are scores to settle before any wish is fulfilled.
