NEW DELHI, November 22: The Lodhi Colony police have recovered a cream-coloured Maruti car (no. DL4C A6879), allegedly belonging to a friend of the Jangpura independent candidate, Tilak Raj Malhotra, carrying 24 liquor bottles.

Acting on a tip-off by a resident, a PCR van found the car containing illicit liquor bottles parked at Rajiv Gandhi camp, behind the CGO complex here at 11.00 a.m. today.

Eyewitnesses said the front door of the car was not properly locked and the police opened it without much difficulty. An open carton with 12 bottles of liquor (Diplomat Deluxe) was found on the rear seat and an unopened carton was recovered from the trunk. A pamphlet was found on the dash board asking voters to elect Malhotra, the independent candidate contesting from Jangpura.

Several members from opposing parties, who reportedly reached the spot along with the PCR van, allege that this is the candidate’s ploy to attract voters. Malhotra, however, refuted this saying that the car had been stolen in the morning and that an FIR had been lodged with the Lajpat Nagar Police Station.

Malhotra, a rebel Congress candidate, also alleged that this is a Congress ploy to malign his image. He has had to go through special checks while canvassing because of such complaints.

The Lajpat Nagar police station confirmed that an FIR was lodged after 11.30 in the morning, after the car was recovered.
