Light, metal

Instead of looking back at some of 20088217;s do8217;s and don8217;ts, we take a peek into the fashion future. Some spring trends

.

Future perfect
Many of the fall runways took a 8220;Mad Men8221;-inspired turn toward retro, ladylike styles, but designers like Balenciaga, Rodarte and Karl Lagerfeld went futuristic, showcasing metallics, space-age materials and architectural shapes, like the Judy Jetson-esque frock designed by Alexander McQueen.

Lighter brights
Last spring, designers paired pops of blindingly bright colour with calming neutrals. With the dismal economic outlook, London designers such as Luella Bartley, Jonathan Saunders and Richard Nicoll have translated the brights into such subdued sherbet hues as peach, melon and tangerine. These restrained yet cheery shades beg to be slapped on a handbag and worn with everything this spring. One favourite? Stella McCartney8217;s coral clutch.

Bold beauty
Makeup artists have created looks such as lush, Brigitte Bardot-inspired tresses and shimmering metallic eyeliner. Two of our favorite updates: the dark, kohl-rimmed eyes at Roberto Cavalli and the glossy, sleek ponytails at Versace.

Dress like an Egyptian
Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are major muses. Look for ornate accessories and floaty shapes with heavy embellishments or metallic gold threading. Pick up some tubular gold bangles or a chunky cuff, such as a blue onyx and brass bracelets.
