The Galerie Alternatives is an oasis in DLF Phase I that has exhibited a number of Delhi’s leading artists. This is a good thing for while it is really an enclave of Delhi, its presence in what was a backward district of Haryana has helped to send new vibrations into the villages dotted around the Aravalis.

The exhibition of S N Sarkar, a young Guwahati born artist, is a modest, and as such, well-grounded show. The artist has generally not gone beyond late impressionism. As he says, the "direction of light harmonies, weather character and weight of colours" is what the work is about.

Again like the impressionists, he seeks to portray "a moment of nature". But there is another element, too, which has its origin in Japanese painting: to put in "minimum work" for "maximum effect" in a work. This should, however, not lead to a decorative device. And if it does not, it leads naturally to an expressionist rendering.

The artist, while wanting to be true to nature, still hankers after "maximum effect". But then, that is bound to lead to a compromise between outer and inner truths. And also, truths are sometimes bitter and may hurt. So, expression takes over. The artist must not defend himself against expression. He must take this necessity in his stride and ensure that inner and outer truths are harmoniously expressed in his work. This may require more work for maximum effect as well. So be it. An artist, especially a young one, has to be open to many options. Then the best ones will emerge from experience.

Indeed, Sarkar seems to be going along that path with landscapes and his studies of an idol of Durga being carried away for immersion. In these works, we have a subtle differentiation between dark live figures and the lighted up image of the goddess, so that the living move around in shadows and the static glows with the energy of their motion.
