Life in the Darjeeling Hills returned to normal following the 60-hour relaxation in the indefinite bandh.

Life in the Darjeeling Hills returned to normal on Monday following the 60-hour relaxation in the indefinite bandh announced by the Gorkhaland Janmukti Morcha (GJM).

Police said the situation was peaceful as people poured out on the streets to stock provisions in anticipation of the difficult times ahead.

The indefinite bandh had been called by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) since June 16 demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland.

According to the GJM leaders, the breather was given from 6 p.m. on Sunday following requests of some union ministers to enable school students to finish their term before summer vacations begin from June 25.

People were found busy buying essentials, specially grocery items, which were almost exhausted in households following the week-long bandh.

The hill town which is usually a late riser, presented a busy scene from as early as 6.00 am with vehicles plying on the roads.

GJM leaders were found ensuring that the common man was not forced to pay exorbitant prices by a section of businessmen.

All traders and businessmen were warned that GJM would take action if anyone was found demanding unreasonable price from the customers.

Many people were coming down to Siliguri to buy food and essentials for their families by hiring vehicles before the bandh resumed on Wednesday morning.
